212 years ago today on May 2, 1800, English natural philosopher and chemist William Nicholson and English surgeon Sir Anthony Carlisle discovered electrolysis. By passing an electric current through water they decomposed water into its constituent elements of hydrogen and oxygen. The word they chose to describe this process is a combination of two Ancient Greek words, electron meaning amber and luo (in the form lysis) meaning to free.
